Climate and Weather of Alpe d’Huez, France

The climate of Alpe d’Huez

Alpe d’Huez is a real cycling mountain and above all a real Dutch cycling mountain. As soon as the weather permits, you can find toiling cyclists against the flanks of the mountain every day, trying to conquer the giant with 21 bends. The Alp has long been a fixture in the Tour de France and many stages were decided on the way up. The course is difficult, it is about 1850 vertical meters, 14 km long and 21 hairpin bends. These bends each have their own number and memorial plaque. Each turn is named after a winner of the stage up.

So you count down slowly on your journey to the top. The start of the climb is already quite tough. The run-up to the mountain starts with a right angle, so that you can hardly make any speed before starting the climb. The part to the first corner is also one of the longer and steeper parts, so you often lose your courage quickly. Arriving at the bend you can take it wider to give your legs a rest (watch out for descending traffic) or go for speed and take the inside bend. In the first few bends (21, 20, 19, 18) you ascend pretty quickly and soon you get a beautiful view of the valley, Bourg d’Oisin and Les Deux Alpes located in the valley.

From turn 16 it gets a little better and less steep and the legs can recover for a while. The road also turns into the mountain here and the view of the first part of the mountain disappears. You can tell from the traffic where the road is above you and that can be depressing. This part is a bit steeper, but nothing compared to the start. You mainly cycle through the trees here. After turn 7 you turn further into the mountain and your end goal comes into view for the first time. One then starts to moan because it is perfectly visible how far it is still, for the other it can be a motivation to turn on a lot. On a busy cycling day, it is a mighty sight to see all those cyclists toil up the mountain in front of you. From here, the vegetation also diminishes and you slowly rise above the tree line. From turn 4 you can also see the village well and there are more and more buildings. However, this can be very deceptive: it is still a long way up. From turn three it also gets a bit steeper and the last part up is a repeat of what you started with. However, it doesn’t matter anymore: you are almost at the top and biting through those last meters, that doesn’t matter anymore. You made it!

According to bridgat, Alpe D’Huez has an alpine climate. Keep in mind that on the way up the temperature gradually drops and the temperature difference between the valley and the top can be about 6 degrees. Especially if you are going to descend the same way after climbing, it is wise to take warm clothing with you. The wind when descending makes it freezing cold and even on a nice warm day the way down is quite fresh.
